PRESIDENT'S WELCOME

Welcome to Barstow Community College where we are committed to helping you achieve your educational and career goals. Whether you are taking transfer classes to move on to a four-year college or university, enrolling in one of our many career and technical education program options to prepare for a satisfying career, seeking to enhance your critical thinking skills, or pursuing personal enrichment, BCC can meet your needs.

President's Picture
As this community’s college, BCC recognizes that students have varying learning styles and preferences, deal with busy life and work schedules, and sometimes just need a little flexibility to succeed. To meet these needs, we offer flexible course scheduling, staggered course start dates, and both full semester and short-term classes. BCC students can choose to enroll in online classes, traditional “live” classes, or hybrid online/live classes. Each option offers a high quality learning experience.
If you are a new student or are already taking classes but still have unanswered questions, I encourage you to visit and talk with our professional staff located in the newly remodeled Norman Smith Center Student Services Building. They will be glad to help you identify your educational goals, assess your needs, and make recommendations that will help you be successful. Student Services staff also can advise you of the many state and federal programs that provide tuition waivers, financial aid, textbook purchase assistance, and child care. While attendance at a California community college is the best educational value in the country, we know every extra dollar is important to students in these difficult economic times.

After you enroll in classes, I also encourage you to explore the many opportunities to become active participants in college life. In doing so, you will get to know other interesting and dedicated students and enhance your overall college experience. Student government, student clubs and organizations, and athletics are just some of the ways you can get involved on campus.

BCC is actively developing training programs to meet the area’s employment needs, thus providing viable career options for students in high demand fields that help meet society’s needs for resource sustainability.

For active duty military, their dependents and contract civilians desiring targeted training, certification or an Associate’s degree, BCC offers classes at the National Training Center Ft. Irwin. Located on base in Building 285, our counselors and staff will be happy to assist you in finding the classes and training that fit the rigors of life on a military installation.

Providing students with a top-level college experience is a major focus of the construction activity on campus. As the college constructs new buildings and remodels and improves existing ones, the Board of Trustees is committed to moving the college toward low-impact “green” technology and construction and emerging alternative energy opportunities.

Over the next few years, BCC will develop a Success Center to promote basic skills instruction and expand non-credit and community education programs. During this time, BCC also will open two state-of-the-art facilities to enhance our educational programs: the Performing Arts Center, which will establish Barstow Community College as the region’s cultural center, and the Fitness and Wellness Center, which will provide members of the community the opportunity to pursue health and fitness activities.

I hope you agree that Barstow Community College is an exciting place to pursue your education. As president, I welcome you home to your community college and wish you every success.
